I find it appalling that it's even possible for a team to be as bad as the Rams are. Then again, the Raiders are almost worse because they actually have talent, they just suck despite it.
Round
1.
Rams
Pick Breakdown...
QB from
The Rams absolutely must leave the draft with a franchise QB. Jake Locker's decision to return to Washington makes Jimmy Clausen the guy.
2.
Lions
Pick Breakdown...
DT from
I've said from the beginning that I think Russell Okung should be the pick here. However, the Lions organization seems convinced their guards are the issue and not Jeff Backus, despite the fact he's conceded over 8 sacks in all but one season throughout his career. Ndamukong Suh is a dominating DT who I have rated as the best player in this draft and would make a huge impact on this defense next to Sammie Lee Hill.
3.
Buccaneers
Pick Breakdown...
DT from
This is a tough pick between Eric Berry and Gerald McCoy, but I have a feeling positional value and need will win out. The Bucs defensive line is pitiful and gets very little pressure on opposing QBs, in addition to being hopeless against the run. McCoy isn't the beast that Suh is, but he's still an awesome prospect in the mold of a Kevin Williams or Warren Sapp who would make a big impact on this defense.
4.
Redskins
Pick Breakdown...
QB from
There's no way the Skins will pass on a new QB this offseason, the only question is whether or not they'll opt to wait until later in the draft or invest in a first round signal caller. If Bradford's shoulder checks out, he'll be the guy.
5.
Chiefs
Pick Breakdown...
OT from
The Chiefs place a high emphasis on positional value, and given that Brandon Albert has been a sieve at LT this year, Russell Okung fills a need as well.
6.
Seahawks
Pick Breakdown...
SS, FS from
The Seahawks could go a number of different ways here. However, I think if Eric Berry is on the board they'll take him here. Berry can play both SS and FS, allowing the Hawks to slid Deon Grant to his more natural position of FS and vastly improve their porous secondary. With no QB worthy of this pick and Bruce Campbell having a history of niggling injuries I think Berry is the better pick to make here.
7.
Browns
Pick Breakdown...
CB from
The Browns needs don't really match up with the talent on the board here. Their biggest need is a QB, but there's no one worthy of this spot on the board, and taking a rush linebacker this high would be both a reach and a foolish decision. I seem to be the only person who doesn't think CB is a major need for the Browns, but it's undeniable that Joe Haden would be a great addition to an already decent secondary. Alongside Eric Wright, Brodney Pool, and Brandon McDonald, Haden would give the Browns a very stingy pass defense.
8.
Raiders
Pick Breakdown...
OT from
If Campbell is available here I think he's as close to a lock as it gets. Al Davis will continue to make excuses for JaMarcus Russell and Darren McFadden busting so far, and thus look to upgrade his offensive line with an athletic freak like Campbell.
9.
Bills
Pick Breakdown...
OT from
With the impending switch to a 3-4 defense the Bills will have to avoid Derrick Morgan here. However, Bulaga isn't a poor consolation prize by any stretch, as he completely stone-walled the aforementioned Morgan in the Orange Bowl and has underrated athleticism. I think Bulaga will be the pick over Anthony Davis because Buffalo's new regime will be looking for high-character players, and Bulaga practically defines the word.
10.
Jaguars
Pick Breakdown...
DE from
Tim Tebow is definitely a possibility here, but I have a feeling the Jags will try and grab him in the second round through a trade instead of taking him here. Morgan is the best 4-3 end in this class and the Jags desperately need an edge-rusher to get over the 20 sack barrier.
11.
Broncos
Pick Breakdown...
WR from
Pick from Chicago. This pick echoes last year's selection of Knowshon Moreno. With all of the worthy defensive talent off the board the Broncos will look to replace Brandon Marshall who seems certain to be jettisoned this offseason after repeatedly clashing with Josh McDaniels. Bryant's athleticism really pops off on tape and he'll likely be the top WR in this class.
12.
Dolphins
Pick Breakdown...
DT from
Watching tape on Eric Berry also revealed that I've been really underrating Dan Williams as a prospect. He's extremely strong at the point of attack and would be a perfect fit in Miami who need a replacement for Jason Ferguson at NT.
13.
49ers
Pick Breakdown...
OT from
I happen to hate Williams as a prospect, however Anthony Davis has some serious work-ethic concerns that will likely ensure that Mike Singletary wants nothing to do with him. Williams, despite his pass-blocking deficiencies, can be a very good RT in this league.
14.
Seahawks
Pick Breakdown...
OT from
Again, there's no QB on the board worthy of this pick so the Seahawks will look to their next biggest need; namely, their offensive line. Sean Locklear and Ray Willis are OK tackles, but there's no depth behind them and Locklear would be much better on the right side than the left. Brown is an incredible athlete with underrated run-blocking skills, and Pete Carroll will vouch for him being very familiar with his work ethic and talents.
15.
Giants
Pick Breakdown...
DE from
JPP is a athletic freak with vines for arms and a ridiculous first step. He practically defines a quick twitch athlete, and the Giants are looking for more playmakers on their defensive line.
16.
Titans
Pick Breakdown...
DT from
The Titans defense looked horrendous against the Chargers, but the secondary never really had a chance with the front 4 being unable to get to Philip Rivers. Brian Price is the type of athletic, aggressive, DT the Titans love. He'd make a great partner for Tony Brown and also allow for Jason Jones to be moved back to defensive end.
17.
49ers
Pick Breakdown...
OLB from
Spoon has the elite intangibles that Mike Singletary loves, and his incredible speed, change of direction, and agility make him a great fit in the middle of the 3-4 with the potential to play some rush linebacker as well.
18.
Steelers
Pick Breakdown...
OG from
Despite a poor Senior Bowl game, Mike Iupati saw his stock soar over the course of the week. He's a mauler with ridiculously nimble feet who can contribute immediately at Guard or even RT for a Steelers O-line that must improve for the team to return to play-off contention.
19.
Falcons
Pick Breakdown...
CB from
Brent Grimes had a great finish to the year and Brian Williams was playing very well before he went down with an injury. Add Kyle Wilson to those two and the developing Chris Owens and the Falcons will have a solid cadre of cornerbacks for the future.
20.
Texans
Pick Breakdown...
RB from
The revolving door of running backs in Houston's backfield ends here, as Spiller is just too talented to pass up at this juncture. The fact that he can stay on the field on third down just adds to his value, and the Texans can really solidify their offense by adding a talent like Spiller.
21.
Bengals
Pick Breakdown...
WR from
Cincinnati's offense struggled when Chad Ochocinco was taken away as an option, something that was especially apparent in their two losses to the Jets. Damian Williams is an excellent route runner and has sticky hands to make the tough catches as well as the determination and athleticism to make the routine ones as well.
22.
Patriots
Pick Breakdown...
ILB from
Part of the reason the Pats couldn't keep Baltimore from running the ball down their throats was the pathetic play of Gary Guyton at ILB. McClain comes from a defense that played base 3-4 and would be an excellent addition to a shaky Pats linebacking corps.
23.
Packers
Pick Breakdown...
DE from
Graham's dominant week at the Senior Bowl will have teams moving him way up their boards, and Ted Thompson won't let his tremendous potential at 3-4 weakside rusher pass him by here.
24.
Eagles
Pick Breakdown...
SS, FS from
Sean Jones really struggled this year and likely won't be back. Earl Thomas would be a major upgrade at a position of need.
25.
Ravens
Pick Breakdown...
WR from
LaFell is tall, athletic, and works hard. He'll be an excellent receiving option for Joe Flacco, which happens to be exactly what the Ravens need at this juncture.
26.
Cardinals
Pick Breakdown...
OLB from
Bert Barry and Chike Okeafor are old and not very good. Jerry Hughes is the best 3-4 OLB on the board and has the potential to be a brutal sack artist at the next level.
27.
Cowboys
Pick Breakdown...
OT from
This is a steal in terms of talent, but Anthony Davis's character concerns are real and will dissuade all but the most arrogant of owners to pass on him. Jerry Jones won't care, and Davis fits the Cowboys blocking scheme perfectly as an immediate upgrade for Marc Colombo and possibly Flozell Adams as well.
28.
Chargers
Pick Breakdown...
DT from
With both Ian Scott and Vaughn Martin showing well this season, I think AJ Smith will decide to upgrade his five techniques, especially considering the top NTs are off the board. Odrick has all the talent of a top ten player, but character concerns will probably cause him to drop, giving the Chargers a steal here.
29.
Jets
Pick Breakdown...
WR from
The Jets need to add another playmaker to their offense to ensure that Mark Sanchez continues to develop. Tate is a bit raw as a route runner but his sheer athleticism and tenacity make up for that in a big way.
30.
Vikings
Pick Breakdown...
DT from
Pat Williams says he wants to retire after this season, and the Vikings really don't have any backup for him. LaMarr Houston is a freakishly athletic run-stuffing tackle who can also make plays against the pass. He's a great fit here.
31.
Colts
Pick Breakdown...
ILB from
Gary Brackett could very well leave as an upcoming free agent, and given his importance to this defense that would be a huge loss. Daryl Washington is a tremendous talent with range and agility similar to Brackett and would be a fine developmental prospect to add to Indianapolis's defense even if Brackett is retained.
32.
Saints
Pick Breakdown...
DE from
The Saints really don't have major needs at this point, and Carlos Dunlap has tremendous upside as a pass-rusher. He obviously has off the field concerns and motivation issues, but if anyone can get his ass in gear it's Sean Payton.
